June 9, 2023 Dear Families, Miigwech to the Student Council students under the direction of Dr. Dale and Mr. Donaldson for organizing a very moving retirement assembly for me this week. It was so inspiring and I really appreciate all of the cards, pictures, the JKL quilt, the rocking chairs and all of the well-wishes. It has been an honor to serve as your superintendent for the past twelve years! Summer school registration is closed but parents have the option of filling out the summer school registration form and placing their student on the waiting list. You will be notified if spots open up in summer school. Summer school runs from July 5th through August 10th and provides our students with many opportunities to enrich their learning experience. Students in summer school participate in many “hands-on” activities in the areas of Culture, math, ELA, science, social studies, and physical education. Congratulations to our Kindergarten students who graduated this week. It was great to see our little ones participate in their first formal ceremony. They learned so much this first year at JKL and we are so happy to have them as part of our JKL Bahweting Anishnabe PSA family. We are so proud of them! Congratulations to our 8th Grade Graduates who will move on to high school. They will be missed but we know they are well-prepared to handle any challenges which may arise. We wish them well and hope they will visit often. It was wonderful to have Ogimaa-Minisinoo present at both graduation ceremonies. Miigwech to all of our staff and volunteers who made our K-5 Field Day possible. The students had a great time playing and socializing with peers and staff on this almost “last day of school.” It was great to see many families and JKL Board members in attendance. Today is the last day for the 2022-23 school year. It has been a tremendous year and our students have grown academically, culturally and socially. Miigwech to our staff who dedicated themselves to ensure the success of each student. Moving forward into 2023-24, we will continue to integrate our Ojibwe Culture throughout our school day and nurture all of the gifts given to our students by our Creator. Have a wonderful week and a great start to the summer! I have really enjoyed my twelve years at JKL Bahweting Anishnabe PSA and know that Dr. Carolyn Dale will do a wonderful job as your new Superintendent! Have an enjoyable summer! Sincerely, Theresa Kallstrom JKL Bahweting Anishnabe PSA Superintendent

May 26, 2023 Dear Families, Our 8th grade students will be departing for their trip to Washington D.C. on Monday, May 29th. While in Washington D.C., they will visit many historical sites, such as the White House, the Holocaust Museum, the Native American Museum, The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, etc. Miigwech to the Fiduciary Committee for providing the financial support to make this trip possible for our 8th graders! Spring assessments are complete as we end this week. Our students took the assessments seriously and we expect to see growth in mastery of the standards. These results will be shared with parents at fall conferences. Staff will be analyzing assessment results to plan for the 2023-24 school year. We are so fortunate to provide a variety of field trip experiences for all of our students as we end the school year. Our younger students participate in trips to Garland Zoo, Project Playground, Dairy Queen and the Fish Hatchery. Our older students have the opportunity to go white water rafting, visit Mackinac Island, and Mackinaw City. All of these experiences extend what the students are learning in class and also provide an opportunity to interact with their peers. Summer school registration is closed but if you are interested in putting your child on the waiting list, please fill out an application and bring it to our Main Office. Summer school runs from July 5th through August 10th and provides our students with many opportunities to enrich their learning experience. April 21, 2023 Dear Families, NMU was here this week for an annual Monitoring Visit. They met with small groups of administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, and students to discuss our school and various academic, social and cultural programs. They also took the time to visit classrooms and observe academic instruction in real time. Moreover, they came on the day of our Drum Dance Social so we were also able to have them visit this event as well. NMU was very impressed with our JKL students, staff and programming. They shared that JKL is one of the top Charter Schools which they authorize. A big “thank you” goes out to Dr. Gordon who presented at our PAC meeting on an upcoming MDE Mental Health Grant. Our school has the opportunity to use this grant as a one-time purchase for mental health resources to support both students and staff. Dr. Gordon received some input from parents and is also surveying our staff for ideas as to how to best utilize these funds. We will keep you posted as we move forward.
