    Dear Parents and Community Members:


    We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2011-2012 educational progress for JKL Bahweting Anishnabe PSA.  The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws.  The school’s report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality.  If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Dr. Theresa Kallstrom, Superintendent, for assistance.

    Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) – Status

    AYP Status is based on student participation and proficiency in mathematics and reading.  Attendance targets must be met for elementary and middle schools and graduation rate targets must be met for high schools and districts.



    AYP Status:

    For 2011-2012, JKL Bahweting Anishnabe PSA made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in the tested subjects (mathematics, reading, science).  While we are pleased to have reached this important goal, we are continuously working to improve.  We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in this effort.


    Focus School Status

    Based on the 2011-2012 MEAP scores in grades 3-8, JKL Bahweting Anishnabe PSA was designated as a Focus School because the school has a large student achievement gap between the top 30% of highest achieving students and the bottom 30% of lowest achieving students across the tested subjects (mathematics, reading, science, social studies and writing; as appropriate for the school grade levels tested).  We are actively working to address the school issues by thoroughly analyzing our data to determine which students are struggling with which learning targets.  We are committed to providing the best individualized instructions for all students.  Information used to rank schools is based on the development of the Top to Bottom list of schools and their performance.


    JKL Bahweting School strictly adheres to the Michigan Department of Education Charter School Lottery System for student admittance.  In the case of openings, a waiting list is created based on a first come, first serve basis. 


    JKL Bahweting School revises its School Improvement Plan on a yearly basis. All teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals and a variety of stakeholders are involved in the development of the plan.  We encourage parental involvement in the development of the school improvement plan.  The School Improvement Plan can be viewed at: http://www.advanced.org/oasis/do/secure/selectAccessCode?userId=31137


    The school follows the state of Michigan curriculum in all subjects with the addition of Anishnabe l   anguage and culture.  The curriculum can be accessed at www.jklschool.org by clicking on the curriculum tab, or by contacting Carolyn Dale at 906-635-5055 x107 or cdale@jklschool.org. 


    The parental attendance rate for fall parent/teacher conferences was an average of 94.8 % in grades K-8. We are asking parents to help us reach our goal of 100% parental attendance at parent / teacher conferences for the 2011-12 school year. 


    JKL Bahweting School is K-8 system and therefore, does not service high school students.  As such, this report does not include high school college preparation information, school dropout rates or high school achievement levels.
